Donald Trump is scaring British kids, a new survey about children and their parents’ attitudes to global affairs reveals.

One third of mums and dads in the UK say their youngster are worried about Trump’s threats to wage war against the likes of North Korea.

Around one thousand eight hundred parents with kids aged between 5 and 18 years old were requested by the Mental Health to take part into this YouGov survey.

It was revealed that parents believe their children are nervous about both world and national events, such as the threat to a nuclear war.

A third of parents thinks that their children are anxious about Donald Trump’s presidency, global warming and climate change.

Child psychology expert Dr Camilla Rosan of the Mental Health Foundation said : “Our polls indicates widespread anxiety among children - especially about the threat of terrorism”.

The parents were asked what sign of anxiety they are noticing and more than half of them said that their children have been asking more questions.

Thirteen percent of them reported their children going as far as asking to avoid activities like using public transport or going to busy places. With a further eight percent reporting nightmares.

Dr Rosan said : “We often forget that distressing world events can have a significant impact on the mental health of our children. This is especially true in the digital age where it’s no longer possible to shield our children from worrying or scary news.”

The Mental Health Foundation has released online and for free 10 guidelines to help parents talk with their children about scary world events.

Dr Rosan said : “Parents can really help tackle problems early and support good mental health by talking about these issues in an open and honest way.”

The tips include letting them know the facts, giving them a lot of space for questions and being as truthful as possible.
